concerns of ebola in america. a refueling stop in maine this morning. he will be treated for ebola at a hospital. dr. nancy snyderman and her team are feeling fine and their return will be soon as well. let's begin with nbc's national correspondent kate snow in omaha. kate, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. ashoka mukpo is due here in a few hours after refueling in bangor, maine acres couple of hours ago. meanwhile here on the ground in omaha, they are ready and waiting. ashoka mukpo's long journey home began overnight when he boarded a specially equipped plane. inside the plane, like this one, multiple layers of protection, designed to make sure no one would ever come in contact with the virus. on the ground in omaha, another

team from nebraska medical center. >> he will be fully suited from head to toe and he will have a face mask covering his entire face so literally not one inch of his body will be exposed. and then our health care workers will be -- have protective equipment on very similar. they'll be covered head to toe. >> when crosses the red line, there's no turning back. >> reporter: the medical director of the bio containment unit took us across what they call the red line, into the area no one will be able to go without full protective gear. >> this room right here. >> reporter: this room? everything is carefully monitored. >> if you hold this open for more than a few seconds, it will sound an alarm. >> reporter: this little camera will give him the ability to video chat with his family just down the hall. we spoke with his parents sunday, just before they flew to omaha. >> the fact that he's feeling well right now or relatively

well, that the symptoms are not severe yet and he's also about to get fantastic medical care is an enormous relief after the very, very stressful few days we've been through. >> every time i would ask him how he's doing or how he's feeling, he clearly would respond with i'm just getting myself through this day until i get on a plane. >> reporter: dr. smith here in nebraska says a lot will depend on his condition once ashoka gets off that plane what they'll treat him with here. that's a long flight he's taking. that would exhaust anyone. we'll see how he's doing, matt, once he gets here and off the plane. >> kate snow in omaha, thank you. there's growing concern for thomas duncan, the first patient to be diagnosed with ebola in the united states. mark potter is in dallas with that part of the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. with news that the patient is doing poorly, they're keeping a close eye on 48 people who may have had contact with him.

their goal to testing and monitoring is to make sure this disease does not spread. there's renewed urgency in the battle to save thomas eric duncan from the deadly ebola virus. he took a turn for the worse over the weekend, downgrade to critical. family members in north carolina say doctors told them duncan is now on a respirator and dialysis machine. sunday night, a week after duncan was admitted to the hospital, hazmat crews were back, decontaminating the apartment where he stayed with his family. the next three days are the most critical for 48 people they believe came in direct or indirect contact with duncan since he started showing signs of the illness september 24th. eight to ten days after that is when most people would start feeling the effects of the virus, according to doctors. so today, tomorrow and wednesday are crucial. but, according to one expert, the delay in diagnosing duncan's illness was a serious mistake that jeopardized the people he

was around. >> when he was out of the hospital for those two days while he was obviously sick and obviously had ebola, he came into contact with a lot of people. >> reporter: one of them was a homeless man who rode in the same ambulance used to take duncan to the hospital. police finally found him on sunday and he is being monitored. so far, authorities say, no one except duncan has shown any signs of infection. that includes his girlfriend, louise, who talked to me by phone from an undisclosed location. everybody's okay? >> yes. >> reporter: and nobody has any fever or any other symptoms? >> no. >> reporter: but the fear of ebola spreading means more people around the country are being screened. among them, a patient in miami, tested on sunday, even though officials say he does not meet the cdc denks ffinition for the virus. just to be cautious. there's good news involving dr. rick sacra, former ebola patient.ent. he was hospitalized as a precaution after developing a

cough and fever, but testing reveals he does not have ebola. there was not a recurrence and now he is being treated for what they're calling a routine respiratory infection. matt? >> mark potter, thank you very much. dr. frieden will brief the president on ebola today. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. >> do you have any updates on mr. duncan's condition in texas? >> nothing beyond what you've said. our hopes and prayers are with him. and we recognize that this is a critical time for him and for his family. and, as you said earlier, this is the time when we're particularly looking at the contacts that he had. 10 contacts who definitely had contact with him and 38 others who might have had contact. every single one of those 48 people was monitored yesterday. their temperatures were taken. none of them had symptoms or fever. the key here is to keep doing that every single day, as texas is doing excellently. and isolate them.

>> when you say isolate them, i want to make sure we're clear on this. are they being called and being told are you taking your temperature? or is there someone watching these people to make sure they don't inadvertently slip out of their homes and expose other people? >> their temperatures are being taken directly by outreach staff from health departments in texas. in addition, their locations are known. if any of them might slip out, as you put it, that's being addressed appropriately by authorities in texas. >> as you know, there's an american photojournalist, ashoka mukpo who has w.h.o. is arrive in nebraska for treatment. how closely will the cdc work with that health center there? >> very closely. we work with them already and consult with the physicians about the care of the patient. we've been doing that on the way over and we'll also make sure that the doctors and nurses and whole team taking care of him does that in a way that doesn't put them at risk, by providing them with support. >> and i just -- quickly now, if

we can, officials in this country have had a chance to get their hands on and observe closely several people infected with this ebola virus right now. has that work led us any closer to a vaccine? and something else we haven't heard about in several weeks, dr. frieden, that experimental serum given to two of the patients. is there any more on that? is there anything promising? >> we don't know if it works but there's no more of it now. the company is working hard to make a few more doses. it's hard to make. it takes a long time. we have learned how important management is. rehydration of patients can be life saving. that's something we're taking back to africa to try to improve the care there, to improve the rehydration of patients. we are seeing signs of progress. cdc has trained more than 4,000 health workers in africa.

we're training health workers in this country, seeing people all over the world coming to help out in africa. exit screening identified 77 people, identified them to get them off the planes in africa. we're definitely seeing signs of progress. >> dr. frieden of the cdc, thank you very much. >> thank you. now to the other major health concern being dealt with across the country, the enterovirus has sickened children across the united states. now a 4-year-old boy who died in his sleep nearly three weeks ago tested positive for the virus. tom costello has more for us. tom, good morning. >> this is the only death the cdc has definitely connected to the virus. there have been other deaths but those patients may have had other underlying illnesses as well. for the vast people that contract it, it shouldn't be a serious concern. for some vulnerable kids, it can

be serious. sunday night, parents gathered to hear from the school district after confirmation that 4-year-old eli wahler died of enterovirus 68 two years ago. he went to bed september 24th but never woke up. in describing him, his father said imagine a shy little puppy who wants only to make people proud and happy, maybe tripping a bit over his own paws, but truly full of unconditional love. including several large clusters of children in denver and kansas city, hospitalized with difficulty breathing. and medical investigators still don't know if there's a connection to another worrisome development acres dozen or so children, some who have shown symptoms of the virus have also developed limb weakness or partial paralysis. it's not clear if it's temporary or permanent. >> the link to paralysis is still uncertain and under investigation. >> reporter: enterovirus d68

itself is common this time of year. runny nose, fever, maybe a cough. but this year there are more cases that seem more severe. patients with asthma or difficulty breathing are most at risk. >> we do want to make sure that parents know that most children who contract enterovirus d68 should be perfectly fine and should worry more if their child has asthma or trouble breathing in which case they should seek medical attention. >> the best advice on preventive steps include washing your hands, don't touch your eyes or nose and stay away from others if you are sick. it's expected to die down as we get further into the fall and the winter. back to you, guys. >> tom, thank you very much. >> lot of health concerns out there today. in other news, you're learning more about that former u.s. soldier being threatened by isis. >> that's right. american aid worker is being held by isis and told his parents in a letter back in june

that he's afraid to die. richard engel is in istanbul, turkey, with the very latest on that, and the fight against isis. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. the hostage's family has made a video message, stressing his humanitarian work and calling on isis to release him. isis is threatening to kill an american hostage next. peter kassig, former army ranger, who travelled to syria to help victims of war. his family said he converted to islam and changed his name. in a letter from captivity, he told his family he was, quote, pretty scared to die. isis is fighting a propaganda war but also making advances on battlefields. turkey this morning sent more tanks to its syrian border, taking up what appeared to be firing positions. this is why. isis militants are advancing

quickly on the city of kobani on the turkish border, attacking it with tanks and artillery. isis has already prepared a huge flag to fly over kobani once it captures the city. they want to provoke a war with turkey, firing mortars into turkey, hitting homes. turkey has sent tens of thousands of troops to reinforce the border. so far, turkish troops has no orders to enter syria and that perceived inaction has caused problems at home, priots breakig out, demanding that they take control over isis instead of just watching the group. if it does decide to send troops into syria, that would mean nato boots on the ground and it could be a turning point. natalie? >> richard engel in istanbul for us. thank you, richard. three service men were swept away by high waves in okinawa as

a powerful typhoon hit shore. one was found dead and two others are missing. flooded highways and caused roads to wash away near tokyo. people trapped in their homes by rising floodwaters were rescued. people were advised to evacuate because of the possibility of landslides. car racing fans are lucky to be alive after miraculously escaping a wild crash in italy this morning. watch as the rally car comes around that turn. it loses control, drives up the embankment and slams into the hillside, flips forward and lands back on the track. amazingly, all the spectators walked away unscathed. that flip probably saved their lives. one young girl was treated for shock and the driver and passenger were taken to the hospital as a precaution. >> i'm surprised they let people sit right there. >> at a high turn.

southbound right where you hit the 76 interchange, you can see a lot of slow-up in the southbound lanes. that's because there is debris on the roadway, forcing drivers to go into lanes around that. a live look at route 422 at trooper road. we're seeing the typical delays on 422 eastbound headed towards center city. and also, we're following an accident in upper providence, mill road at egypt road, so we'll be following that throughout the morning and let you know when that lifts. today, doctors at a delaware hospital are monitoring a child for the ebola virus. officials at bayhealth kent general in dover won't say why the child from liberia was brought to the emergency room on saturday. they tell us the patient was put in an isolate room and the hospital has followed all of the cdc guidelines for investigating ebola. they say the cdc determined the likelihood of the child having ebola is extremely low, but the hospital will continue to monitor the child until he or she is cleared. we'll have another update in about 25 minutes.

forever." with teresa leaving for a minimum security prison january 5th, they admit the family has a tough road ahead. >> what did she say to you? >> mommy, don't worry about it. i'll be there. i'll help daddy with the girls and that will prepare me for when i'm a mom. it broke my heart when she said that. >> reporter: their legal woes were a major story line on last season's show. >> this family cannot function without you. and despite what people say, this is not going to be our last christmas together. >> reporter: but this christmas will be their last, for a while. and those last days before prison are likely to also play out in front of the cameras. >> all i said to my husband was, all you have to do is please, you know, take care of our daughters. that's all i ask. >> reporter: now the judge did say that teresa could get credit for good behavior so she will likely serve 85% of her sentence

in last night and will be waiting for him at the hospital. natalie? >> kate snow, thank you. the first person diagnosed with ebola while in this country took a turn for the worse this weekend. thomas eric duncan is in critical condition at a dallas area hospital. duncan is now on a respirator and dialysis machine. meantime, officials are monitoring 48 people who may have had contact with duncan after he returned to the u.s. from liberia last month. a woman in sweden has become the first person to give birth with a transplanted womb. keir simmons is in london with this amazing story. good morning. >> reporter: this is being hailed as a miracle while folks across the u.s. who have been told they can't have children will be watching closely. this little boy, called vincent, represents a medical breakthrough. he was born just under four pounds, from a transplanted womb.

>> it was breathtaking. i think all of us felt that. and it was like having your own child, actually. it was the same feeling. >> reporter: vincent's unidentified 36-year-old mother underwent a transplant operation in sweden. she had been born without a womb so a 61-year-old family friend agreed to donate. a year later, the mother's fertilized egg was implanted and vincent was delivered early by cesarea cesarean. >> he screamed almost immediately. that's a good sign. >> reporter: there are risks to the mom and the woman who donate. >> unknown risks to any children who would be born. first couple of attempts at a pregnancy they decided to abort when it appeared there were irregularities and fetal abnormalities. >> reporter: but the dream of having a child has come closer for many families. >> they are in good health. >> reporter: hope for women who thought carrying their own child was impossible.

4-year-old daughter, leah, and how the ultimate love of a parent for a child and the courage and spirit born of love can inspire us all. >> i had somebody tell me you won't remember your life before you had a child. did you experience something like that? >> the times when she was born were the times that stick out to me. those are the best times in my life. >> pray for me. >> probably one of the smartest kids i've ever met. she always has a smile on her face. and i think having my daughter at such a young age allowed me to grow into a man faster. >> on his days off, devon still travels to wilmington, delaware, to visit his daughter, leah, who lives there with her mother. he made a trip to see her for a

dance resightal. instead he arrived to find her sluggish, running a fever and complaining about pain in her leg. >> we didn't think nothing of it. when we told the doctor, they touched her leg and she jumped in pain. they had a list of things that it could be. finally, the doctor came out and instantly the doctor's lip started shaking and i got myself prepared to hear my worst fear. they found a tumor in her stomach and it was stage four neuroblastoma. >> the cancer had spread to her bone marrow and lymph nodes and was given only a 50% chance of survival. >> where are you going? >> i don't know. >> when you had to tell her, i can't imagine what that must have been like. >> one point that stuck out to me, she was crying and i remember her looking at me and said to me, dad, this is all

your fault. you should have never brought me to the hospital. i broke down crying, because i didn't -- i didn't know what to say. when we first decided to make my daughter's story public, we had a vision we wanted to bring as much awareness to pediatric cancer as possible. >> reporter: leah's fight soon became a national story. devon's team, the cincinnati bengals, took the extraordinary step of signing him to its practice squad. this allowed him to focus on leah while also ensuring access to the nfl's health insurance plan, to cover her treatments. the team also decided to donate all the profits from the sale of his jersey to pediatric cancer research. and to date, sales have raised over $1 million. but before leah's story even broke, she had a starring role

in another initiative, to raise money for pediatric cancer research. hoda's "truly brave" music video. >> you know what's funny? i met leah. she was so cute, right? she was like, hi. chatty and fun. and i had no idea, none, who her father was. only after we had shot it, we did it and someone said, wait a second. is this young girl the same young girl whose father is the football player? and we went and we did one of those like, are you kidding me? kind of things. >> she was just another kid in that video. >> right. >> what was that experience like for her? >> it was a great experience for her. she loved every moment of it. every time she was on the tv she calls me and tells me how she's a movie star. everybody is keeping my daughter's spirits up and i definitely appreciate all the attention that she's getting. >> in the sea of nfl stories that leave you shaking your head, there's this one. she is so full of light and love and joy, this kid. and if you watch her on screen

for five seconds, you know exactly how much she's loved. >> the night before surgery to remove her cancerous tumor, leah wanted to go to the movies. >> hello, miss leah. >> that was great. >> nice to meet you. >> reporter: devon rented a theater for all her family and friends and leah was treated to a world premiere. ♪ say what you want to say and let the words fall out honestly i want to see you be brave ♪ >> she's a fighter. you always expect your child to look up to you. but honestly since june 2nd i've really been looking up to my daughter. i'm ready for today. are you ready for today? are you ready to get this cancer up out of you? let's do it. fist bump. >> reporter: after a nearly six-hour surgery, doctors were

able to successfully remove leah's tumor. but months of treatment still lie ahead before she can be considered cancer free. >> she is way stronger than i ever have been. for her to be able to continue to smile through all this, and continue to have that same personality, it's amazing and is definitely inspiring to me. >> what was it like in that stadium, when that -- first of all, this one -- >> you know what's funny, though? i did call him just before that movie and leah got on the phone and said are you going to come to my movie premiere tonight? i said honey, i wish i could come but -- >> he has done such a wonderful job keeping her life as normal as it can be. and, really, that's -- being part of your video, that's just part of the treatment as keeping her life as good as it can be. last night, matt, was -- it was

you can hear that initial impact of the car with the curb. it sounds like an explosion. >> no time to get out of the way. here is an incredible story. truly a medical marvel. 36-year-old woman has become the first in the world to give birth with a womb transplant. the newborn was born without a womb, received a trans plant from a 61-year-old family friend, she received the womb. a year after that transplant, the embryo was transplanted and vincent was born by c-section, weighed just under four pounds. both are said to be fine, healthy and well and have returned home already. there are seven more women who also have received transplants. they hope to get pregnant soon but there were, of course -- as with medicine, there were others that did not take and they had to remove the womb. it's incredible. it's being done in sweden and a

law enforcement officers will pay their final respects to a pennsylvania state trooper killed in a training accident. it will be at christ the king church. he was accidentally shot by another trooper during a training exercise last tuesday. he was 26 years old and he was a member of the state police since june of 2012. police are working to identify a driver killed in an early morning crash. the man was speeding when his suv crashed into the back of a tanker truck. that interception was closed for nearly four hours. police say the victim had a fake id on him so they're not sure of his identity. we'll have another update coming your way in about 25 minutes. you can always get the latest

now to our shine a light story and hoda's "truly brave" video that is everywhere. it went viral. last night the video helped bring an entire stadium to its feet. >> it was incredible. fans and players set aside their rivalries to unite over a cause and one little girl, near and dear to my heart, we'll have more on that in a minute. first, nbc 's josh elliott is here with her story. >> what an extraordinary night it was made possible by the great people at foxborough, massachusetts. obviously the nfl has been in the news a lot of late. and not always for the best of reasons. but there has been this, a story of a cincinnati bengals player, devon still, and his 4-year-old daughter leah, devon's devotion, leah's remarkable spirit have inspired fans all across the country. take a look.

>> i had somebody tell me you won't remember your life before you had a child. did you experience something like that? >> the time she was born is the time that sticks out to me. those are the best times of my life. >> pray for me. >> she's probably one of the smartest kids i ever met. she always has a smile on her face. i think to have her at such a young age allowed me to grow into a man faster. >> on his days off, devon still travels to wilmington, delaware, to visit his daughter leah, who lives there with her mother. on june 2nd, he made this trip to see her in a dance recital, but instead she was sluggish and complained of pain in her leg. >> she only complains about leg pain when we say go clean your

room. we didn't think nothing of it. when we told a doctor, they touched her leg and she jumped in pain. the doctor came out, and instantly the doctor's lips started shaking. and i kind of got myself prepared to hear my worst fear, they found a tumor in her stomach and i did believe it was stage four neuroblastoma. >> the tumor was the size of a grapefruit. the cancer had already spread to her bone marrow and lymph nodes and she was given only a 50% chance of survival. >> where are you going? >> i don't know. >> when you had to tell her, can't imagine what that must have been like. >> one point that stuck out to me, she was crying. i remember her looking at me and said to me, dad, this is all your fault, you should have never brought me to the hospital. i broke down crying because i didn't -- i didn't know what to

say. when we first decided to make my daughter's story public, we had a vision we wanted to bring as much awareness to pediatric cancer as possible. >> leah's fight soon became a national story. devon's team, the cincinnati bengals took the extraordinary step of signing him to its practice squad. this allowed him to focus on leah, while also ensuring access to the nfl's health insurance plan to cover her treatments. the team also decided to donate all the profits from the sale of his jersey to pediatric cancer research and to date, sales have raised over $1 million. but before leah's story even broke, she had a starring role in another initiative, to raise money for pediatric cancer research. hoda's truly brave music video. >> you know what's funny?

the first is a man named amina from california. in that before picture, he's 400 pounds. he started first gaining weight in college. i think a lot of people can relate to this. he would skip breakfast, skip lunch, so ravenous by dinner that he would gorge himself on exorbitant amounts of fast food. five years ago, he landed a job at stanford university. there was a lot of walking. this guy is smart. he -- some sort of a research engineer. i couldn't really understand exactly what he does, but he had a lot of walking from building to building and he weighed 400 pounds. he was huffing, he was puffing, he was sweating, uncomfortable. he decided to get a bike. and he would ride the bike from building to building. he has never learned how to ride a bike before. so this is the first time, five years ago. the bike riding inspired him to lose weight, get healthy. he's riding 60 to 80 miles a week and lost half his weight in

with weight her entire life, again, at college, the weight started to really come on strong. and then she had two pregnancies and a lot of women know that it is really hard to lose that weight afterwards. so in her before picture, at her heaviest, she was 333 pounds, she was out there, saving lives in the emergency room, but she was aching. her back, her knees, to the point where she had to switch her job to a paperwork office job. but she never gave up dreams. she thought about learning how to horseback ride and how to hike and take all sorts of adventures but she knew she needed to make a big change. started weight watchers. started tracking her points, eating less, moving more. she's lost 185 pounds and check this out, she is now a volunteer with the wright corner fire department. >> let's take a look. let's at her picture one more time. >> bring her out. >> come on out. >> oh, my gosh. >> wow. >> and i have to tell you that
